Mavs select Isaiah Roby with the 45th pick in the NBA Draft
By MATT GALATZAN
After a long process that included a lot of speculation, the NBA Draft has concluded for the Dallas Mavericks, and with the 45th overall pick in the NBA Draft, the Mavs selected Isaiah Roby, a forward prospect from The University of Nebraska. Amid rumors indicating Its desire to use the pick to acquire cap relief towards their free agency pursuits, Dallas did ultimately elected to make a trade, just not the one most considered.
With the confidence that the player they wanted would still be available, the Mavs would move back, acquiring the 45th pick, as well two second-round picks from Detroit, in exchange for pick number 37, which ultimately turned into Lithuanian prospect, Deividas Sirvydis.
"We know the positions we're deep at," Nelson told the media in attendance before the draft began. "But if a player is good enough, we'll pull the trigger. Shooting's always at a premium. We think there will be some really good names at 37."
That 'good name' at 45, turned out to be Roby, and with his selection, the Mavs now have both a solid fit for their future plans and a player whom they hope could turn into a capable NBA player someday. After playing in a tough league like the Big 10, which features perennial powers such as Indiana and Michigan State, Roby will be ready for high-level basketball from the jump.
With a 7'1" wingspan, Roby is known as an athletic, defensive-minded wing with instincts and a high motor on that end of the floor. Last season as a junior at Nebraska, the 21-year-old Roby averaged 11.8 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks, and 1.3 steals per contest, with a 53.2-percent true shooting percentage in 31 minutes per game. Roby also averaged an extremely good 2.2 blocks per 36 minutes.
Roby's advanced stats on that end of the floor are even more impressive, with defensive win share numbers per 40 minutes at .081, and defensive box plus-minus at an elite 5.8, Roby also fits the profile for what the Mavericks need at the moment, with Dorian Finney-Smith set to hit free agency, and Justin Jackson possible on the trade market this summer.
If the Mavs have their way, however, Roby is more likely to be a player that will be set to spend a good deal of time with the Texas Legends in Frisco, much in the same way that Justin Anderson did in his early days in Dallas.
With the draft now over, the Mavs turn their heads towards a much more expansive and intricate process of luring one or two of many free agents to the American Airlines Center in about 10 days time. Perhaps no so secretly, the chief name among those pursuits will be Kemba Walker, who could have an $81 million decision of his own to make next month.
"We're happy. We're elated," Nelson said. "It was a really good night for us."
