[2级]‘True unicorn’: Ricky Rubio’s bond with Timberwolves fans, in 由 JabariIverson 发表在虎扑·翻译团招工部 https://bbs.hupu.com/fyt-store
When the Timberwolves made Anthony Edwards the No. 1 overall pick on draft night in November, it was a major moment in the rebuilding plan of a front office that salivated at the thought of adding a player with his overwhelming athleticism and raw tools to a roster in need of high-end talent.
In the eyes of many of the team’s long-suffering fans, the party really got started about 15 minutes later when The Athletic reported that the Timberwolves were bringing veteran point guard Ricky Rubio back to Minnesota in a trade with Oklahoma City. Sure, they were excited about adding a 19-year-old guard with the size of a small-ball power forward who could jump out of the gym. But that was almost taking second place to the return of one of the most beloved players in franchise history.
That begs an important question. Rubio is a very good player who has a statistical history of making his teammates better. But why are Timberwolves fans so enamored with a player whose teams went 173-303 (.363) in his first six seasons here and who missed 123 games due to injury during that time while averaging 10.3 points and shooting 37.5 percent from the field?
Rubio isn’t an icon on the level of Kevin Garnett, who returned to a thunderous welcome when he was acquired in a trade from Brooklyn in 2015. But Rubio has always shared a special bond with Timberwolves fans, the imperfect fan base and the imperfect player linked arm-in-arm ever since he arrived from Spain in 2011, and even after he left in a trade in 2017.
“I think for three years straight at ‘Parks and Rec’ my Secret Santa gift was a Ricky Rubio jersey,” said Joe Mande, the comedian, actor and writer for NBC’s “Parks and Rec” and “The Good Place,” among other projects. “They just knew that, ‘I got Joe, I know what I’m going to get him.'”
Joe Mande(喜剧演员,NBC电视剧《公园与游憩》和《善地》等的编剧):“我在《公园与游憩》剧组中连续三年的圣诞礼物盲盒都是里基-卢比奥的球衣。
Love can be hard to define. But you know it when you see it and when you feel it. And as the Timberwolves prepare to open the regular season on Wednesday against the Detroit Pistons, the team’s fans — some you may know and some you assuredly don’t — try to put those feelings into words. They think about the nature of fandom, the sense of community that a game can inspire and the unexpectedly soulful marriage of a kid from one of the most exotic cities in the world and a meat-and-potatoes fan base that treats wind chill as a badge of honor.

For others, the answer is simpler.
“Let’s be real,” my wife, Gretchen, said when she heard about this story. “It’s the eyelashes.”
“Sexuality’s a spectrum,” Mande offered. “No matter where you land on that spectrum, his eyelashes are to die for.”
Rubio’s arrival
Rubio was drafted fifth overall in 2009, a prodigy from Spain who had been playing professionally since he was 14 and went toe-to-toe with the mighty Americans in the Beijing Olympics. From that moment through the next two years while he stayed in Spain to fulfill his contract in the Spanish league, speculation was rampant that he would never play in Minnesota.
Bill Simmons, The Ringer (writing for ESPN in 2010): I thought about making (former Timberwolves GM David) Kahn the following bet: If Ricky Rubio plays even one minute for the Timberwolves, I will drive from Los Angeles to Minnesota for his first game while wearing a T-Wolves jersey that says ‘KAHN” on the front and “No. 1” on the back. (It’s an 1,835-mile trip. I looked it up.) But I don’t want to root for the T-Wolves fans to lose Rubio; they’ve suffered enough. I hope I am wrong. I don’t think I am.
Mande: That was the place fans were at, mentally. “Why would anyone cool come here? We can’t keep them.” I do remember that vividly.
Jeanne Kobs, longtime fan: It took forever for him to get here.
Josh Braaten, actor and Minnesota native: As much as the national media wanted to perpetuate the narrative he only wants to live in New York or L.A., to have him come to Minnesota and embrace it, it was easy for fans to latch on.
Jeff Munneke, Timberwolves vice president of fan engagement: If you go back to when we drafted him, there’s almost this mystical following of him. Nobody had ever seen him play live before. You saw just these incredible YouTube highlights. Behind-the-back passes and between-the-legs passes and it’s almost this mystical figure.
Mande: He was also, in my recollection, the first YouTube sensation. I was so hyped when we drafted him because I had been watching all of these mixtapes of him in Europe as a 16-year-old. It was so exciting.
He finally did arrive before the lockout-shortened season in 2011, and hundreds of fans and team employees met him at the airport to welcome the new kid.
Munneke: Obviously, when we drafted him he didn’t come over right away, so that built his stature even further. All people saw was this boyish enthusiasm and this incredible passing ability and incredible ball-handling ability. So when he came over it was almost like, “Oh my God, there he is.”
Jason Strand, Wolves fan at the airport in 2011: My wife makes fun of me because I watch grainy YouTube videos of Ricky Rubio in some obscure Spanish league.
Zak Chrzaszcz, Minnesota native now living in California: Coming from Spain to Minnesota is a big leap as a kid. He came in and he was just super into it right from the get-go. You could see he worked really hard. You could see everyone liked him.
Zak Chrzaszcz(明尼苏达本地人,现居住在加州):对于一个孩子来说跳出西班牙来到明尼苏达可是个巨大的飞跃。
Mande: I think that there is something about the fact that it took him a couple years to reach the team after getting drafted. There was that buildup, the suspense, and also in the back of your mind hoping he could live up to Steph Curry (who was picked two spots later at No. 7 in 2009) and other people that were drafted that year. There’s something about the absence making the heart grow stronger.
Basketball is fun again
The Timberwolves were 32-132 in the two seasons before Rubio arrived. Coach Rick Adelman brought him off the bench for the first 10 games, but the energy in Target Center was there from Game 1. A rowdy contingent of young fans gathered in the section behind one basket and would sing out the famous European soccer chant to set the vibe as soon as Rubio would enter the game.
Charlie Mahar, longtime Wolves fan: My first reaction is to sing. “Ole ole ole oleeee!” There’s that kind of excitement and fun of that whole Rubio cheering section. If I said any other Wolves player, could you come up with a song? It’s an emotional connection.
Kobs: There haven’t been many players who brought energy like he did. KG brought it. You have that to remember. I just think it’s that X-factor. And I can’t think of anybody else that brings it.
Mande: I have nothing against Jeff Teague, but Jeff Teague always looked like he was at work. The worst shows I’ve ever done as a standup were the ones that, 10 minutes into my set, it’s, “Oh, I’m really at work. I’m contractually obligated to finish this set. I just gotta suffer through it.” There’s something as a fan, as a viewer, you just want to see people having fun ultimately. Just by the losses and stuff he’s still managed to play with a lot of joy which is, apparently, hard to do because I’ve seen a lot of unhappy Wolves in my day.
Steve Little, Wolves fan and youth basketball coach for 25 years: The crowd embraced him from day one. We didn’t know he was the blue-collar worker at the time. We found out. His vision was the biggest thing that surprised me. I know he wasn’t always the greatest shooter. The other thing that surprised me was how smart he was on the defensive end. He calls out the other team’s plays. I knew he was a smart player, but to see his defensive IQ in person sitting courtside was stunning to me.
Steve Little(木狼粉,25岁的年轻篮球教练):人们从第一天开始就支持他。
Rubio’s first stint in Minnesota lasted six otherwise forgettable seasons. He was traded to the Utah Jazz in 2017 for a first-round pick, used to select Josh Okogie. (Brad Rempel / USA Today)
Munneke: When he was in the game, the concourse was a lonely place. People just didn’t want to come out in the concourse because they thought they were going to miss an incredible behind-the-back pass or a between-the-legs pass or hustling and diving on the floor to save a ball. Usually, when he’d sub out, that’s when you’d see people sprint up the steps to go get a beer or a hot dog.
Kobs: He would make that pass that nobody expects, just threads a needle. It’s exciting. I think it’s more exciting than just a slam. It’s art. He really brings art to it.
Braaten: He was just trying to help his teammates find happiness on the court. I think it’s hard not to pull for a guy like that.
Mande: It was such a dreary time for that organization and he was just this shining light and so optimistic. As a notorious pessimist, there is something sort of aspirational about someone in such a hopeless situation being so hopeful and so happy. I think that must have had something to do with it. His selflessness is remarkable.
Underdogs unite
Rubio is 6-foot-3, but he is not overly strong or fast. He doesn’t jump out of the gym or dunk over people. In some ways, that underdog look endeared him further to a basketball community that is often overlooked and helped him sneak up on an unsuspecting league.
Mande: There’s something so great about someone who can reach that level of any profession while having such glaring weaknesses in their game. I always love players like that. Obviously, it’s frustrating in the moment when you can’t make a game-winning basket. But for the most part, I gravitate to players like him.
Braaten: Early on he’d do an amazing play and one of the star point guards he was playing against would say, “Yeah, that was a nice little play.” He was always getting slighted. That’s why I would always get so excited when I was watching him play and you’d see him Eurostep Chris Paul into the bowels of hell and you’re like, “YES! There it is! Vengeance is mine.”
Chrzaszcz: He doesn’t even look like he belongs in the NBA. He was this gangly little kid, but didn’t look like he belonged on the court next to these monsters. But he was able to make the same impact as them by playing defense and making everyone else around him better, even if he had the ugliest jump shot you’ve ever seen.
Mande: My friend in St. Paul made me a t-shirt with Ricky Rubio’s face on it that I wore all the time (in Los Angeles). He’s not super well-known, unless you’re, like, very into basketball. I would get so many comments about my shirt, people just assuming it was a Vine star or a YouTube kid or a boy band member. The fact that he was a professional basketball player would’ve been like the 100th guess. There’s something sort of doesn’t quite fit. His look doesn’t quite fit with what he does for a living.
Braaten: I think Minnesotans can relate to playing under the rim. That’s maybe one thing we can latch on to. But we can’t relate to those passes where it’s a 75-foot bounce pass behind-the-back. You can watch the clips over and over and say, “How did he see that?” There’s only a handful of guys that can do that.
Oh, those passes.
Kobs, who played point guard in high school in Wisconsin: There’s a connection for me as a point guard. The importance of the position. Everybody is all about scoring, scoring, scoring, but if he can bring parts of a game and a victory in another way, we’ll take it. And he can do that. It’s the little things. The big passes, he can do that. He can make (Karl-Anthony Towns) better. I think KAT can get a little emotional, not always to the benefit of him or us. I think (Rubio) can simmer things down and keep things at level.
Kobs(曾在威斯康辛的高中担任控球后卫):我和控卫是有缘的。
Braaten: My introduction to basketball was Magic and Bird and guys who make their teammates better and are just as happy to pass. I couldn’t help but think of Magic to (Kurt) Rambis or Bird to (Greg) Kite. Ricky would be seemingly trapped in the corner, takes one dribble and finds Greg Stiemsma under the hoop for the easiest of bunnies. When you get those easy buckets like that it made me hearken back to my childhood watching those guys.
Munneke, recalling an early game against Dallas: I was standing in the tunnel just to watch and you could feel the excitement when he checked in the game and just feel that standing ovation and the hair standing on the back of your neck. A few minutes in, he not only bounced it between his legs, he bounced it between Dirk Nowitzki’s legs, too. You saw it and you go, “Wait a minute, did that happen?” We replayed it on the board and people were kind of mumbling and murmuring like, “Did we just see that?”
Little, who sat courtside for a game against Miami in Rubio’s rookie year: I knew he was flashy and stuff like that. I just didn’t realize how good his vision was. I was sitting underneath the hoop so I could see down the floor. He was making passes that I couldn’t comprehend as a coach. I wish I could’ve paused the game, walked out onto the floor and looked to where he was passing the ball because I couldn’t see it. His vision was so much better. It was kind of like Steve Nash. It was, “My God, this guy sees things that the normal basketball player doesn’t see.”
Little(卢比奥新秀赛季对阵热火时曾坐在场边):我知道他传球很华丽之类的。
Mahar: I’m a recovering point guard, so I’m a sucker for a pass. It’s the poetry of basketball. How many spectacular passes there were, how many guys who averaged 12 points a game with him that would’ve averaged four without him. Like (Nikola Pekovic). How many assists did Pek benefit from? I love it when a point guard can elevate the play of the guys around him. When he first showed up it was like, “He has this magical power and he’s making us better.”
Chrzaszcz: Seeing someone dribble the ball and distribute the way he did, two behind-the-backs to his left, put two defenders down, you never see that in Minnesota sports.
Braaten: It’s also fun to tweak the people who are so aggravated when he only shoots 37 percent. They want to hone in on that and make that the most important thing in the world. You don’t get it. He does things on the court that maybe four or five guys in the NBA can do. Basketball is not just making the wide-open shot when you’re supposed to. It would be amazing if he did that. He’d be a 6-5 Larry Bird if he could do that.
Home sweet home
It didn’t take long for Rubio to take to Minnesota, either. He found comfort in the slower pace of life, the warmness of the people and routinely sung the community’s praises when asked about bigger markets and glitzier franchises.
Braaten: He understands the concept of acceptance. Abe Lincoln said most men are generally as happy as they make their minds up to be. He lives and plays with that credo. Fans definitely latch on to that.
Munneke: You could see that he enjoyed it here. He loved the accolades that came with it. Just that energy that infused Target Center when he really got it clicking. We had that stretch where we were really clipping along, 21-20 when the knee injury came (in 2012). I think we had four or five sellouts in a row. The energy inside the building was really, really great. Not unlike what we saw in the KG era. That just endeared people to Ricky.
Lucas Charte, Rubio’s close friend and manager: He’s a good-hearted kid displaying everything he has. There’s this feeling that these people here deserve to see more. He gives everything he has every night. He plays not only the best he can, because every player is expected to do that, but also the best he can to help his teammates.
Lucas Charte(森林狼经理,也是卢比奥的密友):他是一个倾其所有的大好人。
Rubio: It’s just a great community, where people really care and love you as a person, too, not just as a basketball player. They love basketball as well. And it’s just a good organization with great people.
A draft-day trade with the Thunder brought Rubio back to Minnesota after three seasons away. He joins a team with aspirations of moving up in the tough Western Conference. (Brad Rempel / USA Today)Welcome back
Rubio’s return has fans feeling oddly nostalgic for a period of time that brought little on-court success. The Wolves were in the playoff hunt his rookie season before he tore his ACL, and five frustrating seasons followed. But they enjoyed watching those teams play with the Spanish kid on the trigger, and that’s more than they can say for much of the time since he left.
Mande: I was opening for Patton Oswalt in Fargo in the middle of winter and we trudged back to our hotel and got the League Pass working and I watched the Wolves lose to whoever. I was doing that because I was hoping I would see an alley-oop or crazy no-look pass. That’s the only thing I was expecting or looking forward to. I guess I have higher expectations now as a fan, but ultimately it’s just that he made losing basketball fun to watch. Honestly, that’s a hard thing to do.
Chrzaszcz: The years he was here … ended in nothing but disappointment but damn was Ricky ever a constant bright spot. There is no player in any sport I have ever rooted harder for. A true unicorn that seeks to make everyone around him better and does so with a skill set that is next to nonexistent in the NBA now.
Kobs: For me, I equate him coming back to, like, this world can change. He’s like a bright light. He’s just a gem of a person. I think he’s going to be great for the young guys. I really appreciate he seems to be willing to take on any role. He just brings a lot.
Munneke: There’s a feeling of some unfinished business with him. And we just missed him, missed his style, missed what he brings to the court. Now that he’s a crafty veteran, he brings a whole other element of leadership on top of the style of play.
Charte: What I think people see in him, they see a real one. They see a real guy trying to do things the right way. Not only to win, but doing it the right way. He will never sit down in a game if he’s not injured. He’s always there for his teammates to listen. He’s always there for his younger teammates to mentor.
Little: I think if you polled 10,000 Timberwolves fans they would agree with me, he’s the second-most popular Timberwolves player of all time. That’s crazy to me because he’s just an average player in the grand scheme of things. In the 32 years of existence, he is the second-most popular player and the first being KG. But KG and Ricky have the same values that us Minnesotans have. KG brought it like I’ve never seen anybody bring it before in person. He brought it every night. He played with heart. He played with passion. He got the crowd into it. Us Minnesotans feed off that. And that’s Ricky Rubio.
