The Boston Celtics haven’t had the most straightforward start to the 2020-21 season. But, then again, neither has any other organization in the league. With the ongoing pandemic taking its toll early on this season, many players have missed games due to health and safety protocols, which has resulted in various games being suspended.

The Celtics currently sit in the fourth position in the NBA’s Eastern Conference standings, possessing an 8-6 record. It’s still very early on in the season and, as anticipated, there is plenty of work for this team to do in order to compete with the big boys in the league.

The team began the season with Kemba Walker sidelined due to his knee problems, which left the rest of the squad with plenty to do out on the court. This did, however, allow first-year guard Payton Pritchard an opportunity to make a name for himself – which he did. The Celtics got themselves a huge win on opening night over the Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks.

Things are looking up for the Boston Celtics at the one-month mark

Since then there’ve been plenty of blips and plenty of positive occurrences, and plenty of canceled games. Celtics superstar Jayson Tatum has missed the last four games, and his return will be a most welcomed one. With the way Jaylen Brown has played through the first 15 games of the season, these two could fastly become one of the premier duos in all of basketball.

There’s a long way to go this season, and that’s a good thing for the Celtics. There’s time to get better which will give the Celtics a realistic shot at competing for the Larry O’Brien trophy again come the playoffs. We’ve seen plenty to get frustrated about, but we’ve also seen many sparks. Here, we’re going to take a look at the top three reasons to be optimistic about this Celtics side, and this Celtics season.

1. Kemba Walker looks like he hasn’t missed a step for the Boston Celtics

Kemba Walker’s injury troubles have had to be the Celtics’ biggest worry over the few months. His left knee was causing him issues during last season and became a big deal after the resumption of the 2019-20 season. Since then, Kemba has had a stem-cell injection. The five-time All-Star missed the opening part of the season as he worked his way back to the court.

Since returning, Kemba has featured in three games. He was on a tight minutes restriction in the first two, as his time on the floor increased to 29 minutes in Boston’s second game of two against Philadelphia. In the first game with Philly, Kemba looked like he was in mid-season form as he blew past defenders, split men, and got his guys to the basket with ease. It looked probable that the Celtics would go on to win that game if Kemba had stayed in the game.

He finished the night with 19 points, six assists and just the 22 minutes logged. Kemba had a similar statistical influence in the second Sixers game as he dropped another 19 in a game where the Celtics as a whole ran out of steam. Walker had an efficient night against the Cavaliers on Sunday, ending the night with 21 points on 58.3 percent shooting and 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. He’s looked fresh coming back into the fold, and that’s a promising thing for Celtics at this moment of the season.

What’s optimistic about these games though is Walker looking as if he hadn’t missed a step. That flair, that explosiveness remains. And the minute restrictions are there and should continue to be there to protect that. A 100 percent Kemba Walker is one of the most elusive offensive weapons a team can have, especially come crunch time. This Celtics team has looked raw, but very talented without Kemba. But, with him, these younger guys you have coming off the bench will learn from his leadership and get better with his ability to lift others’ performances with his.

2. The trade exception

There’s no doubt that this Boston Celtics team is rich in talent. The team’s in a great spot right now and for the future with the pieces, they have, specifically their superstar duo. However, there are plenty of other teams with win-now abilities.

The Western Conference has been considered the most stacked conference for years now, but with so many players switching to the east, it’s not going to get easier any time soon for the Celtics. They’ll be there or thereabouts come the playoffs, and this team’s floor should be the conference semi-finals, but, for a team that’s made the conference finals on three out of the last four occasions, they should be aiming much higher.

Recently, it’s always felt like the Celtics are one piece away from really challenging for the title. They have the abilities to challenge already, but, with one more legitimate addition to this roster, a title challenge wouldn’t be too far of a stretch. The Celtics acquired a trade exception from the deal that saw them send Gordon Hayward to Charlotte, and this could come in handy later as the season progresses.

This trade exception is the biggest in league history at $28.5 million and there are many game-changers that the Celtics could target with it. Whether that would be to add guard or wing depth or to get someone who can really help them in the paint, there are plenty of options for the Celtics to get stronger.

NBC Sports Boston wrote an article on players the Celtics could target with this exception. Every player on this list brings something to the table that the Celtics are missing, be it guard play, scoring, or defense. Even though it seems like a long-shot, John Collins stands out to me. Whilst the Celtics have a number of big men, they don’t have one stand-alone player at that spot. Collins hasn’t had the best start to this season, but last year he was a force for the Hawks, as he averaged 21.6 points and 10.1 rebounds per game.

He’s a good defender who will get even better, and he has the versatility to play in all sorts of lineups. Collins is still just 23 years old and would fit on Brown and Tatum’s timeline. He’d bring a meaningful presence to the Celtics frontcourt, and having him and Tristan Thompson would bolster the Celtics on the boards, as they continue to have troubles there.

Whatever the Celtics decide they want to go for, before the March 25 trade deadline, there’re plenty of guys to go and get to make a real difference to this team. It’s been a rocky start to the season, but there’s still plenty to like about this team. Having this significant trade exception gives Ainge and the Celtics the power to make a serious move as they try and make a run once more.

3. Jaylen Brown

In terms of player performances, Jaylen Brown has been one of the most impressive players in the league to start the year. And this makes him a massive reason to be optimistic if you’re a Celtics fan. Jaylen has made strides each year so far in his career. There was a lot of love for him when it came to All-Star voting last season, and there’ll be even more this. If he continues this form he’ll be a lock to make have his first selection.

Through the first 15 games of the season, Brown is averaging 27.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists each game, with a 60.0 effective field goal percentage (43.0 3-point percentage). These are some serious numbers from the 24-year-old. Brown has shown improvements in every aspect of his game. One of the most impressive areas is his passing game. Last season Brown produced a career-high 2.1 assists per game, which has moved up 1.4 points to start this season.

In Sunday’s win over the Cavaliers, Brown set an incredible scoring record as he scored 33 points in just 19:14 on the floor – the most points by anyone who played under 20 minutes in a game in league history. He’s proving himself as a complete player. Jaylen’s defense has been fantastic since he came into the league, and he continues to get better. When the Celtics drafted him third overall in 2016 many people had their doubts, but he’s proving to be another incredible selection by Danny Ainge.

Over the last four seasons, it’s been questionable what Brown’s exact ceiling is. We still don’t know how high said ceiling is, but we do know that he hasn’t touched it yet, and he’s looking pretty scary on the road to doing so. Brown and Tatum have the Celtics sorted for being competitive for the long-term, they just need to keep the talent coming around them and these two young stars will have very successful careers in Boston.
