Utah Jazz - Western Conference’s best record in what is the organization’s best start in 19 years. How good are they?

"The Jazz have won 19 of their last 20 games, 17 of those wins have been by double-digits."

According to Excitement Index Coach Quin Snyder's team is the most boring team in NBA. Simply because their games are decided early and almost every time it ends with another victory for his team.

It isn't just "lucky winning streak" or playing home games at high altitude (Vivint Arena ranks #2 in NBA Arena Elevations behind Pepsi Center in Denver) that helps Utah to play best basketball in the world at the moment.

爵士正在打出世界上最强大的篮球水准，而这样的势头不止是运气或者对于比赛的投入度所能解释的（爵士主场的海拔高度是联盟第二，仅次于掘金的高原主场）。

Is 2020./21. Utah Jazz team ready to reach greater heights than legendary Utah team with Karl Malone, John Stockton, Jeff Hornacek and Coach Jerry Sloan? I can guarantee that most of NBA basketball fans who are 30 or older will remember NBA Finals between these legendary teams - Chicago Bulls and Utah Jazz.

The Death of Mid-Range & Rise of Threes.  Keep Up the Volume and Keep Making It.

所谓“中投已死，三分当立”，现代篮球对于三分球的产量和效率都有着很高的要求。

That's not a secret that teams in recent years shoots more and more 3-pointers every next season.

近年来，联盟各队每一年的三分球出手量几乎都要比上一年高，这件事已经不是什么秘密了。

Obviously Coach Snyder follows new basketball trends and his team from Salt Lake City is the one who has biggest portion of all shots taken behind three-point line in whole NBA. And what's the most important - they make those shots with high accuracy. 

显而易见的是，斯奈德教练顺应了新时代的篮球潮流。这支来自盐湖城的球队有着全联盟最高的三分球出手占比，而且最重要的是——他们能以极高的准度命中这些三分球。

THREE-POINTER = One of the keys of success.

Utah has the highest 3-Point Attempt Rate: Percentage of FG Attempts from 3-Point Range and 4th highest accuracy from 3-point line in NBA.

爵士不仅有着最高的三分出手比率，而且还投出了联盟第四的三分命中率

In 2020./21. NBA season almost every player of Utah Jazz main rotation players has career-high both 3-point shooting accuracy and  3-point shot attempts per game compared to previous seasons. Only exception is Bogdanovič who already had multiple seasons with very high accuracy and high volume of 3s. It's simply hard to surpass it every next season.

如下图所示，在20-21赛季，爵士主要轮转阵容内的几乎所有球员都投出了职业生涯新高的三分命中率和三分出手量——唯一的例外是博扬-波格丹诺维奇，只不过他已经连续多年维持了极高的三分球命中率和产量，要想再提高实在太难了。

Unselfish basketball. Team with multiple threats. Everyone accepts his role. High IQ basketball. Good shot selection.

Individual skills. Despite we all know Utah Jazz as a team who plays team-oriented basketball most of their FG are unassisted - 45.5% of 2-pointers (25th in NBA) and 76.1% of 3-pointers (28th in NBA).

That's because  Jazz is the one of the best PNR teams in NBA at the moment and they play almost the same amount of PNRs as teams like Dallas (Luka) or Portland (Lillard, CJ McCollum) - teams who are often among leaders in PNR frequency in NBA.

Pick-and-roll is 2-man play but at the same time especially ball-handler must highly skilled for it to be effective.

Players like Mitchell, Conley, Bogdanovic and Ingles (also Clarkson this season shows his potential) all can shoot 3s after screen or attack to the basket. In addition to Gobert who is rolling to the basket it's scary combination.

Compared to currently 2nd best team LA Lakers who are #1  team per post-up frequency (10.0%) Jazz ranks at the bottom of this rank - #30 (1.4%). Two successful teams but with completely different roster and playing style.

Interesting that 2 of Jazz starters are 1.85 m or shorter. According to Basketball-Reference.com Donovan Mitchell is 1.83 m and Mike Conley 1.85 m tall. It would be inspiration to all under-sized players that nothing is impossible even in tall people sport.

另一个有趣的地方在于，爵士的首发阵容中有两名身高1.85米或以下的球员（根据Basketball-Reference.com的资料，米切尔的身高是1.83米，康利则是1.85米），这对于那些身材矮小的球员来说将是莫大的激励。即便是在这项属于巨人的运动中，想要有所作为也并非是不可能的。

First of all "life is easier" when you 2x NBA Defensive Player of the Year in your roster...

Currenty Utah is the second best NBA team defensively - defensive rating 108.0 (2nd of 30). As I metioned in my previous HUPU article about LA Lakers free-throw is the most valuable shot in basketball (points per shot) and both Lakers and Jazz doing great job by disallowing opponents to get to the free-throw line. Both Jazz and Lakers are Top 5 of all 30 teams per fewest free-throws allowed (per 100 possessions.).

目前爵士可以说是NBA中防守第二好的球队——他们的防守效率是108.0，正好排在联盟第二。我曾在之前写湖人的那篇文章（链接戳我）中提到过，罚球是篮球场上效率最高的出手方式，而湖人和爵士在限制对手造罚球方面的表现都极为出色。这两支球队（平均每百回合）送给对手的罚球数都是联盟前五少的。

Defense is not over until you secure a rebound.

在你保护下篮板球之前，防守都不能算成功。

Coach Snyder's team ranks #1 in total rebounds per game (49.3 per 100 possessions). It's hard to imagine elite defense without elite rebounding (especially defensive rebounding).

斯奈德教练的队伍是联盟中篮板率最高的球队，平均每百回合能抢到49.3个篮板球。如果精英级别的防守没有配上精英级别的篮板球（特别是防守篮板的保护），那反而会让人难以想象。

High value shots vs. low value shots.

出手效率的高与低

All defenses wants their opponents to take bad shots. Utah Jazz doing excellent job by provoking  opponents to take the biggest portion of their shots from area (red area in image below) between from 3 to 16 ft  (approx. 1 to 5 m) distance from basket among all NBA teams (#1). These shots has the lowest value in NBA basketball.

每支球队在防守时都希望迫使对手投出高难度的投篮，而爵士在这方面执行得非常之好。他们尽可能地逼迫对手在距离篮筐3-16英尺的中近距离区域（即下图中的红色区域）投篮，其对手在该区域内的出手占比是联盟第一。而这片地方恰恰是NBA中“最不划算”的出手区域。

And that's not all. Utah Jazz is also the best team (#1) in whole league by opponents field goal % from this area. Excellent combination mathematically.

这还没完。除此之外，爵士还能够将对手在这片区域内的命中率限制到联盟最低的水准——两相叠加之下，效果就更好了。

SIMILARITIES WITH MILWAUKEE BUCKS 2019-2020?

看到这样的策略和效果，是不是觉得和去年的雄鹿有点像？

The best record in regular season, very good defense and rebounding, high volume of 3-pointers, basketball & mathematics. 

同样是联盟最佳的战绩，同样有很好的防守和篮板球、高产量的三分以及精密的篮球统计学。

To win regular season is very good but to win NBA Title is another story.

常规赛能赢球当然好，但想要拿到总冠军就是另一回事了。

Milwaukee Bucks coach Budenholzer definitely has something to say about this topic (117 W - 38 L in previous 2 regular seasons).

在近两年的常规赛中豪取117胜38负的雄鹿主帅布登霍尔泽对此很有发言权……

It's nothing wrong to be a good teammate or good person for community, society needs more athletes who cares of it. But question is if group of"nice guys" (I will exclude Ingles and his trash talk from this group) can make it all the way to the top of basketball world? And we don't talk about winning regular season. It really reminds me something from Milwaukee Bucks...

能当好一个队友或者好好回报社区自然是没毛病的，我们的社会也需要更多体恤民情的运动员。但是问题在于，由一群“乖宝宝”组成的球队（在此暂时刨除爱说垃圾话的英格尔斯）真的能一路走到篮球殿堂的最高点吗？这事可跟常规赛赢多少场球不一样。目前的他们真的会让我想到前几年的雄鹿……
