Julius Randle had a quiet All-Star debut. He played 13 minutes and mostly watched from the bench as his team got blown out in a meaningless game.

And he did not mind — not at all.

“I’m leading the league in minutes,” he said. “It was a great thing. I’m fine.”

It was a reward for a breakout season. Randle is the catalyst of these surprising Knicks, averaging 23.2 points, 11.1 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game. He went from an underwhelming outside shooter to hitting 40.8 percent of his 3s and casually launching off-the-dribble jumpers. It has been quite a come-up.

Randle’s big season also comes at an interesting time. He is midway through his second season in New York after signing a three-year contract in 2019. After a flawed first year, he is now leading the franchise’s turnaround.

His long-term future in New York has looked uncertain at times, but Randle says he has never wavered in his desire to spend a while with the Knicks, certainly not now.

“When I came here almost two years ago that was the plan: I wanted to be here long term,” he said. “I want to be a Knick. My thoughts haven’t changed. I would love to be here long term.”

Now the onus is on the Knicks. Randle is eligible for an extension this offseason, something he is aware of but not willing to address yet.

“We’ll see when we get to that time, but right now I’m just really focused on what we have to do as a team,” he said. “That’s so far ahead in the future. When that time presents itself, I’ll be ready, and we’ll talk or whatever.”

That time could come very soon. The Knicks can offer Randle an extension on the second anniversary of his contract, according to the collective bargaining agreement. That would put July 9, 2021, as the magic date, based on when the franchise announced Randle’s signing two summers ago.

The CBA also prescribes the kind of deal he can get.

The Knicks can offer Randle a four-year extension on top of the year he has remaining for the 2021-22 season. The salary for the first year of the extension can be worth no more than 120 percent of his salary in the final year of his current contract. Randle is slated to make $19.8 million next season, so he could earn $23.76 million in the first year of the extension.

The Knicks can also offer Randle eight percent raises off that first year of the extension for each subsequent season. That means the Knicks can give Randle a four-year, $106.44 million extension ($26.6 annually, on average) on top of the $19.8 million he would make next season.

That is a significant sum, of course, and it would represent a large raise for Randle, which he has certainly earned. It also might not be enough.

If Randle were to accept the extension offer, it would make him the 39th-highest-paid player in the NBA in 2022-23 (when the deal would kick in). That seems like an underpay considering he was just named an All-Star and thus one of the top 24 or so players in the league. It also doesn’t take into account the contracts that would be signed between now and next summer, which could push him further down.

It’s not outrageous to say Randle could make more if he were to wait and hit free agency in 2022. He would be 27, with at least one All-Star nod on his resume. If you’re looking for a comp, recent history says there might be more money to be gained out there.

Seventeen players made their first All-Star Game from 2017 through 2020, and 16 have since signed new contracts. They could at least offer some insight into what kind of deal Randle could net, though some of these players signed extensions with their own teams.

Obviously, not all of the players listed above are good baselines for Randle. Gobert had already made two All-NBA teams before his first All-Star team. Like Randle, D’Angelo Russell was a former Lakers lottery pick who took a bit to reach his All-Star team while playing in New York — but he was younger, and his breakout season was less productive.

The best comparisons might be players such as Khris Middleton, Kemba Walker, Nikola Vucevic and Gordon Hayward, all of whom made their first All-Star team in their mid-to-late 20s. All but Vucevic eclipsed $106 million when they hit free agency.

If Randle were to get the max extension offer from the Knicks, he’d have to weigh whether he can get more money the next summer. Fifteen players have signed for more over the last three offseasons.

Next summer could also be a more welcoming place for free agents. Perhaps NBA revenue will jump back up again if fans return to NBA arenas for the 2021-22 season, which could bring up the salary cap.

Turning down an extension also would not preclude Randle from staying in New York. He has a partially guaranteed ($4 million) deal for next season. At this point, the Knicks are very likely to pick it up. Then they could just re-sign him in free agency without an artificial limit on how much they can pay him (well, a lower artificial limit compared to the higher one prescribed by the CBA for free agents).

That would come with risk, of course.

There is the risk of injury; Randle has already suffered one major injury during his NBA career, so he knows the uncertainty that looms out there.

There is the risk of some kind of regression to his previous form or some underperformance. Randle’s 2020-21 season has resonated so much because it’s unlike how he has played in the past. He has never been this good a shooter and this good a creator. His defense is better. Everything is working this season. What if next year isn’t as productive?

There are cautionary stories out there. Victor Oladipo might be the best comparison for Randle this year. He was also a high lottery pick on his third team who broke out after getting into tremendous shape. Oladipo was 25 in his first All-Star season (Randle is 26) and in his first year with the Pacers. He made the All-Star team again the next season, but his production was down almost across the board. He also suffered a major injury and played in 36 games. All told, he has played just 79 games the last three seasons, but he could also still get paid well in free agency this upcoming summer.

Whether it would be difficult for Randle to turn down $106 million if the Knicks were to offer depends on his willingness to take a chance. If he can maintain his performance this season and replicate or improve it next season, it’s likely he would earn an even larger deal next offseason, hitting the free-agent market at 27. Hayward, at 30, just signed a four-year, $120-million deal in November with the Hornets coming off three difficult years in Boston.

This also ignores the Knicks’ side of the discussion to some degree. Randle has undoubtedly been very good this season. He has been emblematic of the ethos Tom Thibodeau brought to New York. But as the NBA has taught us, nothing is for certain. Leon Rose’s long-term plan for the Knicks is unknown, as is Randle’s role in it. The Knicks are not even four months removed from drafting Obi Toppin, ostensibly a replacement for Randle, with the eighth overall pick.

But moving Randle would also have consequences for the Knicks. It could be a tough look for the franchise to trade its self-made All-Star the offseason after he helped revive the organization and provide its fan base with its most exciting season in years. Trading away your best player, instead of rewarding him, could make for knotty player relations for a franchise that wants to fix its reputation.

That is all speculation, and the Knicks could very well just make an offer to Randle as soon as he is eligible for one. Then, it would be his turn to make a move. The Knicks can pay Randle handsomely after his All-Star season, if they so choose. It still might not be enough.
