Ranking every draft class from 1996-2020:Part 3
The NBA Draft always provides a level of hope. For many markets, the draft is the premier way to build the core of the champions of the next generation. However, not all draft classes are created equal.
This year’s draft is considered one of the best drafts in years, prompting the thought of which draft class has been the best? We will look back at the last 25 draft classes to determine where they rank as a whole.
In the last 25 years, there have been two of the draft classes considered the best of all time and possibly the worst. Where do they all rank?
The bulk of these rankings will be based on the accolades earned by the players involved. All-Star and All-NBA selections will be taken into consideration, as those are typically the qualifications to also make it into the Hall of Fame. For some of the more recent classes, we will have to project more than review what they have already done. It takes most normal players a few years to make the leap to All-Star or All-NBA level (Luka Doncic is the current exception to that rule).
There will also be some honorable mention players to put each class into perspective. Over the years many players have never earned the aforementioned accolades but were still more than capable of pushing teams over the top in title contention. We will only be looking at players who were actually drafted, as the best undrafted players of all time would be an entirely different discussion.
Now let’s get started.
19. 2014
If not for an injury in college, the number one pick in the 2014 draft would have likely been correctly chosen and changed the course of multiple franchises. Joel Embiid showed flashes of being a future MVP-level talent at Kansas but injuries knocked him out of the lineup. Andrew Wiggins has never quite lived up to that hype but he is a quality NBA starter. Throughout the draft, the class is improving.
Julius Randle was taken seventh overall and was named Most Improved Player this season while making his first All-Star and All-NBA appearance. Zach LaVine also made his first All-Star appearance and is a walking offense. However, the best player in the draft was selected all the way at 41.
Nikola Jokic was the MVP of the league this season and averaged a near triple-double as a center. He is the most skilled passing big man many have ever seen and he is still just getting started. Having two possible MVPs shows the depth of class that had two players at the top mostly bust.
Even more impressive is the number of players primed to take the next step. Spencer Dinwiddie is going to find a new team this summer and could take that All-Star step. Jerami Grant did just that this season and was only prevented from getting the accolade by virtue of being on the worst team in the conference (something that is never rewarded). Joe Harris is one of the best shooters in the league and a key for the Brooklyn Nets’ entire scheme. Bogdan Bogdanovic and Clint Capela have transformed the Hawks’ depth around Trae Young. Marcus Smart, Aaron Gordon, Jusuf Nurkic and the list goes on and on.
18. 2018
The playoffs this year changed the narrative around the 2018 draft class. Everyone knew that Luka Doncic was on that level from the second he was drafted. Doncic is a generational talent that changes the course of your franchise simply by putting on their jersey. Much of the rest of the class needed to prove something once they got to the bigger stage.
Trae Young has become one of the stars of the postseason by embracing being the villain and pushing the Hawks all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals. He turned the narrative around on himself from foul hunter to the ultimate showman. Similarly, Deandre Ayton has shown why the Phoenix Suns took him number one overall. He has developed the kind of chemistry needed with Chris Paul and Devin Booker to push for a championship and is not solely focused on getting his numbers.
The next tier is breathing down their necks to have next. Collin Sexton puts up great stats and is not afraid of any moment. Jaren Jackson Jr. was a shell of himself this season, but when he was healthy a season ago he looked like a future All-Star. Michael Porter Jr. went 14th due to injuries but is going to be a star. Shai-Gilgeous Alexander nearly made an All-Star game this year. Mikal Bridges is almost as crucial to the Suns success as his fellow draftee Ayton.
17. 1997
One of the best players of all time was drafted in 1997 and yet the rest of the class was not quite strong enough to pull the class up into the upper half of the rankings. Tim Duncan was a no-brainer selection coming out of college and was just inducted into the Hall of Fame this year with a staggering resume: five-time champion, three-time Finals MVP, two-time MVP, All-Star MVP, 15-time All-NBA, 15-time All-Star, 15-time All-Defense and Rookie of the Year.
Two other players in the class also made an All-Star appearance. Tracy McGrady, a fellow Hall of Famer, never made it out of the first round of the playoffs but he was one of the faces of the league for a generation. He led the league in consecutive seasons, averaging 32.1 and 28.0 points respectively. Chauncey Billups took a little longer to click but once he did was a true champion. Billups played for four teams before making it to the Detroit Pistons where he was a three-time All-Star (plus two more in his next stop with the Denver Nuggets) and a Finals MVP.
Then comes a significant drop-off. Keith Van Horn and Tim Thomas had solid careers. Jacque Vaughn was widely respected and would go on to be a head coach. Stephen Jackson wanted all the smoke and is a champion role-player.
