Introductory Press Conference, Welcome James Harden & Paul Millsap
Josh Harris: Great day for Phillies, excited to be here, excited to welcome James and Paul, its gonna be awesome. James, thank you for choosing Philly to play. Players like James don’t come along every day so the fact he is here, is testament to everything has been built. Starting with Joel, MVP-caliber player, what he
is being doing and growing to, and obviously the leadership around me, with Doc and Daryl and Elden and so thank you everyone. The last thing I say is very much appreciate Ben, what he did, Seth, Andre the contributions to Philly, we wish them well. But now let’s do this thing. Thank you
Daryl: We are very excited. Josh and ownership have been behind Doc and the front office 100 to do whatever it takes to put us in the position to , as Doc says be the winner, win the last game of the season.
I’d like also thank Ben and Seth and Andre, for their contributions. Doc and the coaching staffs and the players have put us in the spot whereas we make this trade, we are well-positioned to go on a run. A run that hopefully excites the city of Philadelphia. With Paul, he is someone, Paul knows, we are talking to this offseason and hoping to acquire. Took us a little time but we really excited about what he can bring. He is a very versatile player. As Doc said a couple days ago when he was looking at the team. He was, “we have been looking for a player with the particular set of skills, and he is developed over his career. And James Harden, having two, An MVP and then a guy who is on-pace to probably be the MVP if he can keep it up, is really exciting. All the hard work happens from here. We haven’t accomplished anything yet. And I love Docs says
the champion is here to lead us. Turn it over to questions. Oh Doc, sorry, my bad.
Doc Rivers: Really I don’t have a lot to say, I mean I think you guys are here to ask questions except for thank Ben, Seth and Drum. I mean they are all great, each one of them. I enjoy coaching all of them. One of the reasons I wanted to come here, is that we would make a commitment to win and being a winner. We talked about it, we can do a lot of winning or we can try to be the winner, and being a winner is hard, that’s what we want to become. That’s why we make trades like this, going out and getting Paul and James, we want the opportunity to be the winner, and we believe this trade does that.
Q: Hey, how you doing? Welcome to Philly, James, this question is for you, I guess it’s a two-part question. Why did you went out of Brooklyn and why did you want Philadelphia to be your destination?
Harden: Originally, When I was going to through everything I was going through in Houston, Philly was my first choice. It just didn’t happen. It’s just the detail, I don’t really want to get into with the Brooklyn situation. I just knew for a very long time this was a perfect fit and obviously you had a big man, the best big
man in the league in Joel and obviously the coaching, just top to bottom it makes sense. I’m just happy and blessed that I’m here. As Doc and everybody knows, everybody wants is win and be the last team stand. I am excited for the opportunity.
Q:James, are you able to clear up what happen with the opt-in? I guess it was report that you were going to opt-in for the next year here with the sixers after the trade? You still have the opportunity to do that. And will you?
Harden: I still have the opportunity to do it. Yes, it just everything happens so fast. I just want to get here and take my time and most importantly focus on the in game and let’s win the championship.
Q: And what can Joel Embiid do for your game and what can you do for Joel’s game?
Harden: I think we complement each other. You know obviously the whole world knows how great Joel’s been playing. Now I just going to basketball, rebounding, get triple-double in last game, just like his presence alone is unbelievable. I feel like I am in the same way as far as you know, making my teammates better.
Doing different things, impact the game at the highest level. And we have a great core of guys also can help with that. I wish I was playing tonight, just take my time and after the break we will get things going.
Q: You haven’t step on the court yet, but before you even were in Philadelphia, your jersey sold out in the arena in less than an hour. There is a billboard touting “welcome the beard”. How is the reception made you feel and how did you feel about playing in front of these fans?
Harden: These fans are the best fans in the NBA. A lot of teams say that, a lot of organizations say that, a lot of fan bases say that. but ride or die, probably the best fans in the NBA. I am just happy they are on my side I'm excited they're on my side. I am not get booed as opposing team. I am excited man, just love the atmosphere. Going to the arena, is going to be something special.
Q: Daryl, question for you. First you say the team set up for the future. The way I understand it, with this trade, another trade you cannot use a first-round draft pick till 2029. Is that correct? Because you cant trade two no.1 in a row with the way you have spread out. How much of issue could that be in trying to make a trade? And I have a question for James as well.
Daryl: Our focus is obviously to win now. In turns of our tradable first (rounds) , that is technically true although there are things you can do behind the scenes. Actually, Miami just did to modify certain things to make a first(round) tradable, if you want to go that route. But our focus was to keep as many great players as we could. We are in the window of Joel, James, and Tobias right now. Making sure Tyrese Maxey is here,
making sure Matisse Thybulle is here. Those were the big priorities. We want to give them nothing, but you have to give up something to make a trade and get a hall of famer, a player that can put us into a different tier of competing. We are very comfortable, and we have thanks again to Doc and the coaches that we
have a bunch of young players I think you have seen them out there contributing the last few games because we have to include Drummond in this deal. Paul Reeds coming in and done a nice shot, Isaiah Joes coming in, Shake Milton is a young player…so we have a lot of things that both putting us in a position to win now
but also young players are still there, improvement occurs. but obviously Maxey has been the one the most extreme. So we are very comfortable where we at now and going forward.
Q: James just to follow up, when Keith questioned about coming here, is 3 teams now in 14 months. Can you explain the thoughts behind that and why so many in such a short period of time?
Harden: hehe, I mean I wasn’t plan like this. 14 months ago I didn’t teams up with so many different teams but we all we are here today and I am happy. Last year has been a lot of ups and downs, a lot of stress, but whatever that is in the past. I am excited. I am healthy and it’s an opportunity for lifetime.
Daryl: When I spoke to Sean Marks of the past week primarily, and a little bit before that, like I felt like it should have been a three team deal originally, the fit was there for that, would have been ideal for all three teams if it was originally structured that way.
Q: What do you feel like whether on the court or off? Are the conditions that you need for you to be at your best?
Harden: I think I am going through that right now, like as far as me, I have to make sure I am great, I am healthy, I am in the place for I can be the James Harden I can be on the court. And everything else from what I have been here the last couple of days is already in place. Obviously you know Josh go through things
and Doc, he makes sure everything, everybody knows their role, their structure. For me I just need to go out and knew what I am going to do. So my job is pretty is easy.
Q: Hey James, Joel is Pretty different from a lot of bigs that you have played with in the past, you played with a lot rim runners, guys run the pick & rolls with you. Have you talked to him much about how you are beings are gonna match him, how to you see the partnership come together on the floor?
Harden: We are both at a high level to where we’ll figure it out. Joel does everything on the floor. So we got guys on our team that are very smart, we communicate and we have coaching that is going to put us in positions to be successful. Listen here, they have something great already going on, I’m just here to contribute. And I know that I can do that very well. On the court when you got high-level skilled guys that know the game and all they want to do is win, they’ll figure it out.”
Q: Daryl, you sort touch this in your opening remarks. How did you sort of balance the possibility of making this deal now versus maybe waiting until the offseason, what does this now do as far as your overall roster building? I know you always like to tweak and improve but just a deal like this, where does it put you guys as far as your overall roster building vision?
Daryl: Well, Bryan and I have been working on this since Rich Paul came to us said Ben was looking for a new situation, if we could get a deal done then we will get it done. Then it just it was pretty straight-forward for us and I from the beginning, our mission, that’s been giving to us, the whole reason that everyone on the team is really here. It was all unfinished, all unfinished business for all of us and we have all come together and we knew from the moment Ben asked out if we are going to do a trade that had to be for one that we thought could allow us to compete at the high level and the way this league works, you have to get player of the caliber of James Harden and to pair with Joel Embiid and Tobias. You can win without it but you look historically in the league, you are looking pretty long odds if you don’t have two great players of that level of
play out there.
Q: Hey Paul, You played for some really good teams and you played for some really good coaches, what excites you about this team and this coach?
Millsap: First of, I appreciate it. It’s going to be little weird up here but... . You know, the culture. Coming into practice yesterday and seeing the joy on the guys' face and seeing how together everybody is and seeing the energy in the building...that's what I love. That’s what I love to be around. That’s what I love to come to everyday. Being on those good teams in the past that I’ve been on, all that have the same energy. Coming here, with the talent, the players and the coaching staff, the organization mixed with that energy and talent. I mean, it’s unbelievable.
Q: For James, Tyrese Maxey is really developed a really big role here, I guess what you have seen from him for going up against him and how do you see your game is matching together?
Harden: He had an opportunity this year of the circumstances, his confidence is going to the roof, he is always in attack. And obviously his 3-point shooting is extremely improve but that right there is overall the entire game is improve. I think the aggressive mentality to get to the basket, to knock down the shot when he is open explains it all. Obviously, he is surrounded by really good players, the MVP this year, to make his job a lot easier but that’s why I am coming in, to talk to him to help him, as much as I can. He’s been doing
unbelievable jobs and he is continuing to get better.
Q: This is for Josh, when you bought team 12 years ago, the big first move was Andrew Bynum, that didn’t work. And you have Sam come in, deconstruct, and reconstruct the draft pick, that didn’t work, then you had Jimmy and Tobias, that hadn’t work and you had.. What makes this different?
Josh: we have got two great players to build around, we had great coach Doc Rivers and unbelievable front office and Daryl, we have the commitment of the ownership to do what it takes and we got a lot young players as Matisse (Thybulle) and Tyrese (Maxey) , Tobias, so I think we have the ingredients to win here. We are gonna have the goals to win the championship, we are gonna keep trying until we get there , there is no
straight line at the top, we got just keep pushing.
Q: Daryl, where do you think the ceilings are for Tyrese (Maxey) and Matisse (Thybulle)? Who you protected really since you got here?
Daryl: They are critical. Tyrese absolutely has a chance to be an All-Star in this league. Obviously there is a lot of work but I know he will put it in. That is one thing. That is amazing about Tyrese like James said his confidence but also commitment to put the work in has been incredible. Thybulle I think easily could be Defensive Player of the Year, after Joel wins it first. Thybulle , as you see in the last game, 6 steals I think the coaches really work with him on both using some of the unique skills and also being solid and providing that solid defense he needs to win, to have a championship caliber line up on the floor. Both of them, sky’s the limit and that’s a big reason why we made sure they weren’t in this trade.
Q: This question is for Daryl and Doc, you guys gave up some size in that trade when it came to Andre Drummond who also was playing well as well too. How do you guys look to, where you guys look to replace the size aspect of that when it comes to him and if not who do you guys foresee in taking over that role?
Doc: Well we’re looking I mean, we like some of the guys we have. Obviously, Paul is going to help us in that. Both Pauls, and Paul Reed as well. You know we have Charles Bassey, but you know the buyout market is out there as well and we are looking.
Q:For James, you mentioned before James that when you were originally looking to leave Houston last year, that this is was the first place that was initially where you thought you’d be. Why did that not happen? And I have a follow-up.
Harden: oh no. (“Daryl’s fault” by someone at the back)
Q: The way it was presented was that you sort of had the option to choose where you wanted to go
Harden: I mean I wish it worked like that but you know the organization’s gotta do what’s best for their team. Present and future, so it didn’t work like that, and I had to go to Brooklyn. Which obviously, we all know that could’ve been something special, but whatever reason it was for that, but here I am today.”
Q:and to that, second point, is the uncertainty around Kyrie’s situation this year ,did that play a part in how things developed over the past couple of months for you?
Harden: Very minimal, honestly like, obviously Me and Kyle are really good friends. Whatever he was going through or is still going through, that’s his personal preference, but it definitely did impact the team. Because originally you know obviously me, Kyrie, and KD on the court, and winning covers up a lot of that stuff. It’s unfortunate that we played 16 games out of a whatever it was and it is what it is, but here in Philly’s an opportunity that I’m looking forward to.
Q: Doc told us a few days ago you’ve reached out to him previously about wanting you know him to be your coach. Why did you do that and what are your expectations of playing for him
Harden: One of the best coaches that ever coach the game of basketball. Like Why wouldn't I want to be led by that? You know I’ve been doing it for a very long time but he was doing way longer than me and he’s
experienced way more than me and as a player that I am I still need to learn I still need to be helped and taught and be put in a position to be successful. You know so, why not?
Q: James, we talked about Joel and Tyrese but I’m just curious how you think you are gonna be able to fit next to Tobias well just a guide you know out on the perimeter.
Harden: Tobias is a guy that can go get you 20 a night - and I feel like it's my job to get that out of him. He’s very versatile as well. so my job is to help be the leader man, push guys and get that swagger out of guys every single night because ultimately that's going to help us get to the end goal, and that's to win a championship so We all know how great a talent Tobias is but it’s my job to help him and from top to bottom.
Q: How is your physical condition right now as far as like being able to play in a game? How does your hamstring feel and are you kind of on board with we’ve been told you won’t play until after the all-star break. Is that, I guess, a collaborative decision?
Harden: yeah, hamstring feels really good, just doing a lot of strengthening work right now, definitely was a collaborative decision on after the break making sure we are a full go, like uphill is the only way we can go. And then to my condition is great you know I have been doing a lot of running, a lot of sprints, a lot
of treadmill work, strength, and conditioning, but there is nothing like basketball conditioning. Playing and playing 5 on 5 and pick and rolls and getting hit things like that so that’s something I got to incorporate but overall, my body feels great.
Q: James, um, talked a lot about we’ve heard the world championship being thrown around here for the last half hour. Pairing you and Joel, you know, do you see that being possible (championship), I am sure you see that being possible this year, what we will take to make it happen. It was a hell-yeah?
Harden: hell yeah. Um There's a lot that goes into it, it doesn't happen over night. But I think just being here around guys, they have the right mindset, obviously coming from the coaching staff. But after the break, man, it's go time. As much as I can incorporate and figure things out fast, which probably won't be long, the better things will be. It shouldn't take long at all, I pretty much can fit anywhere."
Q: There is question for Paul. Paul I was wanting to know if you could tell us like what it was like when you found out about the trade and how that went about and everything?
Millsap: Yeah, I found out that the trade I was actually in Atlanta playing five on five in the middle of a competitive game. (Not Golfing?) No it wasn’t, it was too cold out there. In the middle of game and my brother looked over and said Hey you are going to Philly I was like “what?” you know, competitive game going, I’m trying to win the game so when the game got over it, that’s when it really hit me and got really excited about it. That’s how that.
Q: For James, at the start of the press conference, Josh thanked you for wanting to play in Philadelphia. Based on everything that‘s publicly available, you didn’t want to play in Houston anymore, you were able
to leave. You didn’t want to play in Brooklyn anymore, you were able to leave. What does that say about you and what does it says about the power that NBA players wield in this era of basketball?
Harden: Umm, for me I think that the relationship that I had in Houston, it was basically mutual, but everything was on me and same in the last situation but for the most part we can control our own destiny. Not that I say that’s a good thing or bad thing, but I know in my situation, for whatever reason, it was mutual. Relationship is not new with Josh but obviously knowing Daryl, knowing Ted for my Houston days, knowing Doc for me. It’s just it made sense man it’s a time where I needed to be around guys that I know that want to win and know that they are willing to do whatever it takes to win, and the structure here is unbelievable. That’s the goal, man. That’s the goal like Daryl said, the opportunity to win is now. Joel is playing the best
he's ever played. So my job is to come out there and help him and help the entire team win a championship this year and in years going forward.
Thanks guys. Thank you, appreciate it.
