Levi Colwill wears the No 26, is a graduate of the Chelsea academy, plays at centre-back and is comfortable with the ball at his feet. No wonder there are a lot of supporters calling him “the next John Terry”.

You may think it would be a connection the 19-year-old would want to shy away from. Terry is probably Chelsea’s greatest homegrown player. He won 15 major trophies, 78 England caps and captained the club for more than a decade.

But just as he acts on the football pitch, the teenager is not fazed. “I’ll take it,” he tells The Athletic. “I’m not going to complain. It’s not a bad thing to be called the new John Terry.

“I haven’t made the comparison myself so the fans and media can make whatever comparisons they want to make, it isn’t going to affect me.

By choosing to wear the same number at Huddersfield that Terry wore at Chelsea, it might appear to be a deliberate attempt to be likened to the former England captain.

But Colwill explains: “Everyone is saying it’s because of John, but it’s because that’s the date of my birthday (Colwill was born on February 26, 2003). It was my number when I was growing up, even if I was just playing a football game on Playstation.

“When Huddersfield told me I was going to get the No 26 shirt it was perfect. Obviously, all the Chelsea fans started comparing me to John Terry. Have I thought about changing it because of that? No.”

This is not a sign of overconfidence or arrogance. After talking to him as well as watching him play, he has all the hallmarks of a mature young man heading to the top.

Colwill will never forget his first and only trip to Wembley Stadium in 2014. He was a budding footballer having joined Chelsea’s academy at under-nines level. His first memories of kicking a football were as a four-year-old with his dad, also called Levi, outside the family flat in Southampton.

But when he walked out with uncles Byron and Barry Mason at the national stadium eight years ago, it really sparked his ambition. Levi’s relatives were part of the Sholing — a non-League club from Southampton — team who beat West Auckland Town in the FA Vase Trophy final. His wish could be granted at the end of this month. Technically Huddersfield still have a chance of automatic promotion from the Championship, but their goal difference is markedly inferior to second-placed Bournemouth (+33 to +15). Bournemouth, like Nottingham Forest in third, have two games left to play, whereas Huddersfield have just one to close the three-point gap that exists between them (Forest are level with Huddersfield on 79 points but ahead on goal difference +34).

Realistically, Huddersfield are going to need to win the play-offs to return to the Premier League after relegation in 2019.

What it would mean to him to help Huddersfield go up? “Everything,” he says. “This isn’t just my team, it’s my family. If we go up it will be the best thing ever.

“Being asked to play under that pressure is part of the learning curve. It is something you won’t get to experience much in your career. Playing with this team, the togetherness that we have, it will be a good challenge for us to prove ourselves.

“With my uncles winning at Wembley already, it also means I have a tough act to follow. Hopefully, I can carry on the family’s winning record. They will be messaging me about it beforehand if we get there, 100 per cent!”

There were several clubs keen on taking Colwill on loan last summer, but Huddersfield acted fast. They made a strong pitch to Chelsea academy director Neil Bath and loan technical coach Carlo Cudicini before pre-season, explaining how they would use and develop him.

Chelsea agreed to the season-long switch and convinced Colwill to sign a new four-year deal, too. It has worked out, although there have been low moments. His appearance in the 2-1 win over Coventry City on Saturday was just his seventh start of 2022. He had made 20 before the turn of the year.

This is his first campaign at senior level so inevitably injuries have been a factor. He has had ankle, knee and hip problems to deal with this season, plus COVID-19.

“It’s been tough for my body physically,” he says. “I have had a few niggles here and there and it’s been frustrating. “It’s tough to watch matches, especially when they are little injuries and I don’t know how I’ve done them or what I can do to prevent them.”

No one can accuse Colwill of being to blame for his absences or that he is not looking after himself while he lives on his own, far away from his parents Levi and Deborah, for the first time in his life. Although there is one confession that may alarm some readers.

“I can cook a bit,” he says. “I give everything a go but I do like a spaghetti bolognese. You can’t go wrong, can you? I have mine with a bit of salad cream (a sweeter version of mayonnaise), it’s easy. My family are all big salad cream lovers so we have it with a lot of our meals.

“What do I do when I’m not training? I sleep mainly. I’m always tired! After training, I will cook some food, watch TV and have a nap. Boring but I enjoy it. It’s been a lot easier living away from home than I imagined because I’m doing what I love. Even when I’m not playing, just being around the team makes me happy.”

It is evident his parents still play a huge role in his life. The rising levels of expectation surrounding their son mean their advice and protection could prove crucial to his development.

“They’re the most important people in my career,” he says. “They know what I’m like, who I am as a person. If I ever do get a bit big-headed, they remind me where I come from and how hard we have all had to work to get to this point. This is just the start. We know there is a lot more to go through as a family and to achieve as a family.

“They drive up to see me a lot. My dad comes to every game, no matter where it is. It’s good to have them so close to me, to keep me humble.

“My parents are the best of both worlds. My dad is more about what happens on the pitch. He’s been watching me play since the start so if it’s anything about what happens on the pitch, I go to him. Off the pitch, I go to mum. She is the one who will constantly remind me that there is a bigger world out there. When I’m down and she can see it, she is always there to give me a hug. It’s a perfect mix.”

It would be understandable if he had developed a bit of ego. The teenager is being talked about as a Chelsea and England player in the making.

Huddersfield have taken other players on loan before they established themselves as Premier League players — Ben Chilwell, Emile Smith Rowe and Chalobah among them — but many at the club describe Colwill as the finest.

Colwill’s rapid development could turn out to be great timing. Chelsea are facing the possibility of needing to replace three defenders in the senior squad this summer. Antonio Rudiger is probably joining Real Madrid, Andreas Christensen has agreed to join Barcelona and Cesar Azpilicueta, despite triggering a one-year option in his contract, could join the Dane at the Nou Camp. It is asking a lot of the eventual new owners to fund top-quality replacements so to have one ready-made from within is a major plus.

A lot of Chelsea supporters are already talking excitedly at the prospect of him being in Tuchel’s squad next season. Plans are in place to look at him during pre-season in July.

“Even though I know there are a lot of people talking about me, I don’t listen,” he says. “I just say it’s all a load of rubbish because if I start playing badly for a few games, they will be saying I’m not good enough. For example, look at how things were going well for me this season and then I had a little injury that kept me out until the end of February. I played one game, scored and then got COVID. It’s been hard to build it back up since.

“It’s just a lot of talk and I don’t buy into it. I haven’t really thought about playing in Chelsea’s first team next season. I haven’t been keeping up with what’s going on with the takeover. I have just been concentrating on Huddersfield. It’s the only thing I can affect right now. I won’t be thinking about what I do next until this season is done.

Do not underestimate his ambition. Pressed if he thinks he is ready for the Premier League, he said: “I think I’m ready. I’ve learnt a lot this year so the next step I hope will be in the Premier League with Chelsea, Huddersfield or whoever.”

Like any Chelsea loanee, Colwill has benefitted from being assigned a loan player technical coach. The centre-half was working with Paulo Ferreira, whom he has known for a decade. The former Portugal right-back took sessions with Colwill’s under-10s Chelsea side as part of his coaching badges so they have enjoyed a good bond for a long time. But much to his surprise last month, Ferreira left the club after 18 years as a player and staff member.

“If there were any games in London, Paulo would be there. He came up to Huddersfield once or twice and if there were any games on TV, he’d watch them too and give me a text after or call. He’d talk to me about what was good and bad, what I needed to improve on. He helped me a lot with my development this season.

“He watched QPR away (Huddersfield lost 1-0) and I told him that I thought I’d had a rubbish game. He was like, ‘I wouldn’t say you were rubbish but it wasn’t the best game you’ve played’. He told me that I hit too many long balls instead of playing it shorter at times, which I totally agreed with. He was right.

“I’ve improved my defensive side a lot. I’m winning more headers, being more aggressive. When I was playing for Chelsea’s under-23s I wasn’t as much of an aerial threat. But now I can win headers, I can challenge more. I still have a lot to improve. I have to work on my defensive side, marking and things like that. I’ll always look to improve.”

That last comment is appropriate given a player he has studied and idolised from childhood is Thiago Silva, who leads Chelsea’s back line at 37.

Silva joined as a free agent last season after being released by Paris Saint-Germain. It has meant Colwill has had the chance to train with him, not just watch.

“It was surreal,” he says. “I wasn’t daunted though. I just tried to keep my composure and not look like a fanboy. I didn’t get a chance to speak to him properly while I was with the first team.

“What do I like about how he plays? His composure and how he reads the game. The way he is always steps ahead of everyone else and not out of position. He cancels out the danger early and that’s what the great centre-backs do. It’s not about reacting to the danger when an opponent has made a move. It’s about reading the situation early and stopping it. That’s what I try to do.”

A few days after Colwill said this, The Athletic got to see this.

The buzz in the away end at Coventry Building Society Arena is palpable. What looks like more than 2,000 fans have made the trip to see if Huddersfield can get the win they need to keep their automatic promotion hopes alive.

There is no sign of nerves from Colwill in the warm-up, as pass after pass finds a team-mate, most notably using his left foot. This is his first appearance for two weeks due to a hip injury, but noticeably as the game is about to start, not one of the Huddersfield players feels the need to go over and give some last messages of encouragement or guidance. It comes across as a sign of how much they trust him.

Colwill is playing as the left-sided centre-back, the position Rudiger is about to vacate at Chelsea. Within a minute he has made his first interception.

But suddenly, is that a sign of vulnerability? Colwill slips in his own area and the Coventry fans behind Huddersfield’s goal raise their voice, spying a chance for their team to take advantage. In a flash, he is on his feet clearing the ball.

Coventry’s leading scorer Viktor Gyokeres is trying to play off his shoulder but is not having much joy. Each time a cross comes in the area, Colwill seems to be in the right place to clear, something Terry had a knack for doing.

But not every touch is a good one. In the 31st minute, he passes a ball straight out of play. A hand is raised in way of apology. “It’s a sign of how I’m still working my way back to fitness. I am a bit rusty. Those passes happen sometimes,” says Colwill after the match.

“I’m still trying to find that form again, which I’ve been struggling with in the last few games. It happens to the best players in the world so I just have to take it on the chin and try to improve.”

Coventry are punished for wasting a hat-trick of great chances as Harry Toffolo puts the visitors in front before the interval with a shot from outside the area.

Colwill continues to cruise after the break, passing it simply, doing the defensive side of his game well. Another Chelsea loanee, Tino Anjorin, comes on to put Huddersfield 2-0 up and Colwill runs across the pitch to celebrate with him.

“He is something else,” Colwill tells The Athletic with a grin. “When he came on he changed the game. His presence is remarkable. When he gets on it and turns, no one can stop him with his power. They were trying to foul him but they couldn’t get near him. We need that.

“It has definitely helped to have him around (Anjorin joined in January). We are good mates. We bonded straight away with each other again. It’s good to have another player from Chelsea around me. I also have another ex-Chelsea academy player here, Jon Russell. It helps me feel more comfortable in the team.”

In the closing minutes, Colwill noticeably fades. He dives in rashly to give away a free kick on the edge of the area but it comes to nothing. Then, shortly afterwards, Callum O’Hare crosses for Gyokeres to earn Coventry’s late consolation.

“That was probably my fault, too, because I’ve gone to press the No 10 (O’Hare) and then he’s not got the ball and just spun off me,” Colwill says. “I fell asleep and he got in behind. When he got in behind I was like, ‘Oh no, that’s my man’. Hopefully, I’ll be sharp for the play-offs. That’s when I hope to play my best football of the season.”

If Huddersfield win promotion, they will attempt to sign Colwill on loan again. Other clubs around Europe are also thought to be considering making a bid for a loan or permanent move. But do not be surprised if he is wearing Chelsea blue and gets the chance to start following in Terry’s footsteps after all.
