Ronaldo will still be a club legend even after this. We can be hurt that he's doing this but we have got to be honest he was an integral player in probably our best period (2006-2009) in the last 20 years. He came back, did his bit to try and keep us as competitive as we could be but it didn't work out. While this does hurt his legacy with us, he's still the best player a lot of us have watched in a Utd shirt in the past 20 years.

I personally will always look fondly at the numerous good times he gave us in both stints at the club.

I don't doubt Ronaldo had great success here. But it isn't just success that makes you a club legend.

He used our fans support multiple times to increase his contract at Madrid.

He is forcing a move away from the club for the 2nd time. First time he claimed he was treated like a slave, this time he is forcing a move when we lack options and are most of the way through a transfer window.

He is not showing up to our training facilities due to family reasons but is in training facilities in Lisbon.

The complete disrespect to the club and fans is astonishing and he doesn't deserve to have the club legend status. That's for those who put the team before themselves.

We still celebrate George Best and he left us for City in probably our 2nd worst time in team history. We still celebrate Becks and he left acrimoniously to Real. Heck, Rooney actively sulked, refusing to celebrate goals with the team for a period of time and requested a transfer request and he's a club legend. I don't know about y'all but players who bring us sustained success on the pitch will always be a shoo in to be club legends. When it's all said and done we'll still have the memories of him running rings around Bolton on his debut, the Portsmouth free kick, the Porto goal, the Arsenal free kick in the UCL semis, him running rings around Essien in that UCL final, the 42 goal season from a winger, the numerous trophies he won us and many other memories to fall back on. He's the only player a large majority of this fanbase has been alive to see win the Ballon d'Or in a Utd shirt. And one of only 4.

It hurts now but I don't doubt a majority of the fans will get over it in time and remember him as a club legend.

E: was thinking about Dennis Law relegating us while with City and not George Best at City. But my point still stands Law is still considered a Utd legend.

George Best was at the club for 11-12 years though and never played for City? He was before my time but I can't remember any mention of City, and can't see anything about it (please correct me if I am wrong).

Becks left because of a falling out with SAF, I think the fans understood that one.

Rooney did sulk, guess we will never know if he really would have left or not. But once again he spent 13 years here and became our top goalscorer.

Maybe Ronaldo will still be viewed as a club legend, but his success at United was during my time and the feeling has definitely soured here.

And I understand why you'd feel like that. But 2006-09 CR7 is the best player we've had at our club the last 20 years. Probably even the last 30 years if we're being totally honest with ourselves. There's been players who have played longer, and got better stats than him or won more trophies than him but there's not a single player Utd fans could stand in front of other fans at any point in the last 30 years and claim "We have the best player in the world currently" and not be laughed at as delusional. Even peak Giggs or peak Becks or peak Scholes were behind Zidane, Ronaldo, Figo, Gaucho, Nesta and the likes.

It's no coincidence a decent number of our current players (both in the senior team and the academy) look up to him as their football idol. If that isn't worthy of legendary status at a club, I don't know what is.

Giving more to the club. Is Suarez a Liverpool legend because he had one absolutely top class season? No. Is he more of a legend than Stevie G, Carragher, or even players like Salah and Mane? Doubtful.

And tbh, his peak was better than anyone Liverpool has had, bar possibly Salah, but I'd argue his was greater.

Just because a player was the best in the world for one season does not automatically make him a legend, espcially for all the shit he has caused.

AFAIK, Suarez only won the league cup with Liverpool. CR7 was an integral part of our 3 peat EPL seasons. Was the main player in our last UCL triumph and our almost bid to be the first team to repeat as UCL champions. On top of the FA Cup where he scored. He won us trophies as a very integral part while being the best player in the world. Of course he's a Utd legend.

He was also at City before he even came to United. Once again 11 years here. Best, Law, Rooney all spent 10+ years here and achieved lots. They are what club legends are.

In 2006 at age 21 he wanted to leave united for Real Madrid OR Barcelona. He said it would definitely be one of the two. Fergie convinced him to stay another season, and the next season he agreed with the then FIFA president Joseph Blatters words equating Ronaldo to being a slave. Club legend, really? Never was, in spite of his trophies with united. He's spent more time trying to leave this club than anything else

You don't have to make stuff up to try and dampen his legacy. I've never heard about him wanting to move in 2006 but even if he did how much of that was the fallout from 'the wink' at that summer's world cup? I can only remember SAF telling him to come back and that they'll shelter him from the hate he'd get from other English clubs fans for the fallout of the Rooney red card.

But you've got your dates mixed up. He wanted to move after the Euros in 2008 to Real Madrid. And the Sepp comments were during that season. He still came back and towards the end of the season when it seemed like our title defence was faltering and we might concede a record equalling 18th title to Liverpool getting their 19th, he came up clutch for us. Even in the UCL he carried us through the knockout stages to the final (IIRC all his goals in the UCL that season were in the knockout stages).

I know the emotion is raw now for all of us but he's definitely a club legend for us even if he's currently forcing his way out of the club.

Youre right about the timing of the Blatter comments, I indeed got it mixed up.

He also indeed wanted to leave after the fallout of the 2006 WC but does that make it justifiable?

He wanted out and was willing to join either Real or Barcelona, while painting a bad image of Ferguson for not wrapping him in wool.

Honestly, one of the only justifiable reasons to request a move away. You saw what they did to Beckham after 98? And his were consequemces for his own actions. No way should a player ever get that kind of treatment ever because of their actions on a football field. And to make it even worse, it was all because of a wink and asking the referee for a justified red card moment from that country's chosen golden boy?

What have United done that is worthy of Ronaldo's disrespect?

Was it the success he had with us previously? Was it the fans chanting his name whilst he played for Madrid? Was it the 500k+ a week we paid him to return at 36?

Also, are you saying Ronaldo would stay if we 'showed ambition' in the market? If so, who would we have had to sign? As far as I see, Ronaldo wants CL. No signing we make will put us in the CL next season.
