5- Evan Mobley – 86 OVR 

You could do an interesting case study on the average NBA fan’s value of defense over offense, and vice versa, simply by asking them their opinion on Evan Mobley. The Cleveland Cavaliers’ brightest and most crucial young piece is a versatile seven-footer who has already become one of the league’s best defensive players. Evan Mobley is an inefficient three-point shooter, as he has only shot 23.2% from long range in two years, with his efficiency declining from year one to year two. His fit with the Cavaliers on the offensive end has also been just a tad awkward, as Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell are both ball-dominant guards who prevent Mobley from posting a high usage rate. This has proven to be an obstacle in Mobley’s development as a shot creator and scorer. 

Mobley’s size came into play in the New York series, as he was manhandled in the paint by Julius Randle and Mitchell Robinson. He struggled to create his own shot, and his defensive versatility proved inconsequential against the Knicks’ overwhelming presence of size and athleticism in the paint. Mobley has also struggled at setting effective screens, ranking in the 45th percentile as a pick-and-roll man in his sophomore season.

Given these glaring red flags, which became more apparent in the playoffs, it seems premature to rank Mobley as an 86 overall in 2K. That rating puts him firmly alongside Anthony Edwards, a far more versatile and surefire franchise player with the potential to become the best player in the league one day. Typically, players who rank above an 85, particularly young players, are sure-fire All-Stars who are elite scorers and all-around basketball players. Mobley has yet to average more than 16 points per game – a partial reflection of his role in the Cavaliers offense, but still a sign of more necessary growth before he is rated this highly.

However, Green’s shooting splits of 41.6/33.8/78.6 reflected the fact that volume, not efficiency, was responsible for his otherwise solid averages. His PER was below the league average at 14.5, while his USG% sat at an exorbitantly high 28.1%. Compare that to Franz Wagner, whose shooting splits were extremely impressive for a young second-year forward, sitting at 48.5/36.1/84.2, with a 58.9 TS%, which ranked higher than efficient stars like Mikal Bridges, Darius Garland, and Jaylen Brown.

Green should not be rated over Scottie Barnes, who received an 83 overall, and whose offensive deficiencies are at least somewhat counteracted by his elite defense and effective playmaking. After all, while Barnes did post a slightly lower TS% at 52.4% than Green, he also managed a higher plus-minus, a higher PER, and was much more efficient near the rim.

Furthermore, this rating seems like it is based, not on the entirety of Butler’s playoff run, but on his incredible first-round performance against a championship favorite in the Milwaukee Bucks. In that series, Butler remarkably averaged 37.6 points per game, including a 56-point performance for the ages. Butler was phenomenal in that series, but NBA2K ratings should never base a player’s talent level on one five-game stretch, even despite the high stakes of playoff basketball.

It feels like 2K’s ratings adjusters decided that the monumental feat of carrying an eight-seed to the Finals warranted a 95-rating for Butler, but the Heat were simply not your typical eight-seed. This was a team with droves of playoff experience, that was the one-seed in the Eastern Conference just one short year ago. They were led by one of the best active head coaches in the NBA in Erik Spoelstra, and an NBA legend in executive Pat Riley, and their roster was scattered with experienced, talented veterans like Bam Adebayo, Kyle Lowry, and Kevin Love. Butler averaged 24.7 points in 13 games against the Knicks and Boston Celtics in the rounds following that Bucks series. In short, Butler reverted back to the same high-level superstar that he has always been – just not 95 overall level. He relied heavily on role players like Gabe Vincent, Max Strus, and Caleb Martin to show up time and time again as excellent complementary scorers in order to make up for his deficiencies as a primary ball handler and shot creator.

I could overlook all of these facts if Butler had turned in another legendary performance in the Finals, but the simple truth is that he played more like his regular All-Star level self, averaging 21.6 points, shooting a lackluster 41.2% from the field. A 95-overall rating is reserved for the best of the best superstars in the NBA, and Jimmy Butler simply does not fit that mold. Butler’s current rating puts him alongside Luka Doncic, a transcendent superstar who has serious potential to end up as a top ten player all-time when his career ends.

Butler’s 95 overall rating puts him on par with some of the best statistical, MVP-caliber talents the league has ever seen when compared to All-Time rosters. With all due respect to Jimmy Butler, it seems as though this rating was determined purely based on recency bias, and simply does not accurately reflect his actual talent level.

2- Victor Wembanyama – 84 OVR

LeBron James was a 78 overall in 2K4, Kevin Durant entered the league as an 80 overall in 2K8, and Zion Williamson came in as an 81 overall in 2K20. Yet somehow, Victor Wembanyama has earned an 84 overall rating despite not stepping foot on an NBA court yet.

The Wembanyama hype train has only served as a target on the young French phenom’s back, as the expectations are already astronomically high.
