How much money is likely to be available?

There is not a specific budget, and signings will depend on what opportunities there are. It’s often said that January is a difficult month to make signings, but in the previous two years Spurs have brought in significant players in the mid-season window: Kulusevski and Bentancur in 2022, and Porro last year.

They didn’t go as big as they might have done in the summer when ultimately late deals for Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher and Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly weren’t possible, so there should be more scope for signings in January than at some clubs. And they have more headroom when it comes to complying with Financial Fair Play regulations than some of their rivals.

Though it’s worth remembering that in the summer Spurs wanted to move a midfielder out before bringing Gallagher in.

In midfield, and returning to the importance of versatility, Spurs will probably look to bring in a No 8 but, ideally, they’d want someone who could also play as a defensive midfielder or in an advanced role given they have so many absentees in midfield with injuries and Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr soon to be away for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Spurs explored a deal to sign Gallagher on deadline day in September, and he has a lot of admirers at the club. If he is available for transfer in January — and sources close to Chelsea, speaking anonymously to The Athletic to protect relationships, say the club are prepared to listen to bids — then Tottenham will try to do a deal.
