After nearly three months out injured, Thomas Partey is finally back for Arsenal. The Ghanaian made his return to training earlier this week and is hopeful of being involved in Tuesday's trip to Nottingham Forest.

Arsenal are wary of rushing him back, particularly given that Partey suffered the thigh injury that has kept him out for so long while making his return from a hamstring injury that had ruled him out for six weeks prior. Assuming they are able to get Partey's rehabilitation right, which given his record since joining the club is not necessarily a given, the 30-year-old's return has the potential to help Arsenal two-fold.

The Gunners are already well versed in Partey's capabilities at the base of midfield. In their unexpected title charge last season the former Atletico Madrid man was largely excellent in the number six role, and prior to that his form had propelled Arsenal to a Champions League qualification push. In limited matches this season though, Partey has been used differently by Mikel Arteta.

It began towards the end of last season where, with William Saliba and Oleksandr Zinchenko out injured, Partey was used as a right back. While that could be put down to managing an injury crisis, with far more options available to him at the start of this season, Arteta once again opted to use Partey in defence.

In hindsight it seems he was telling the truth.

By inverting into midfield, Partey enabled Arsenal to play with the box midfield that is often seen when Zinchenko is in the side. The Ukrainian drifts into midfield from left back, and enables Arsenal to dominate the middle of the pitch. Partey did this from the right.

It's also interesting to note the position of the number 2 William Saliba in this position map from the Forest game. That day the Frenchman was playing the left sided role that Gabriel normally operates in. In their partnership Gabriel is generally the more aggressive centre back, while Saliba tends to sit in and act as a sweeper. To ensure he was able to continue doing that without Gabriel in the side, Arteta shifted Saliba to the left centre back starting position with White playing the more aggressive role on the right hand side. Ostensibly Saliba's role as the central sweeper stayed the same though.

Partey playing at right back is not as simple as a right-sided Zinchenko however. When asked if the two could play together back in August, Arteta admitted that he would be open to the possibility

This can be seen in Arsenal's subsequent game against Crystal Palace, where Partey again started at right back. That night he played a much more traditional full back role, staying closer to the touchline and helping to dictate the play from there as we can see in the average position map below

Arsenal's average position map against Crystal Palace shows how Thomas Partey was more of a traditional full back while William Saliba was very central again.

Again, you'll notice that Saliba was able to maintain his deeper central sweeping position in this set up, while Declan Rice operated as more of a lone pivot. The line ups in the two games were the same bar Tomiyasu coming in for Timber. The tactics though were vastly different.

The point here is not so much that Partey offers Arsenal one thing in particular at right back, but rather that he unlocks a host of options for Arteta. This is something the Spaniard hinted was in his plans at the start of the season before he lost both Partey and Timber to long term injuries.

With Partey's return and Timber hopefully back before the end of the season, Arteta is getting closer to the enjoyment that he tasted for a mere 46 minutes at the start of the Premier League season. The Ghanaian offers Arsenal a host of different possibilities that make them the one thing that Arteta wants above all else - unpredictable.
