Enzo Maresca has been warned that he is in danger of being sacked by Chelsea at the end of the season, unless he turns around their alarming slump.

Maresca earned plenty of plaudits earlier in the season after overseeing an overhaul of the Blues’ bloated squad to create a cohesive unit. Their form was so strong that the former Leicester manager was forced to reject suggestions they could challenge for the Premier League title in his first season.

He has been proven right, with Chelsea now sitting sixth in the table and facing a real fight to finish in the top four. They have suffered back-to-back defeats against Brighton, who dumped them out of the FA Cup before repeating the trick with a chastening 3-0 win on the weekend.

Those results mean that Chelsea have won just three of their last 11 games in all competitions – and one of those was a 5-0 thrashing of League Two strugglers Morecambe in the FA Cup. Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara believes that Maresca could be under threat if the run continues, given Chelsea’s trigger-happy reputation with previous managers.

“Enzo Maresca is struggling a bit at Chelsea,” O’Hara told Grosvenor Sport. “We saw something similar at Leicester – his team started strongly but faded in the second half of the season. Right now, the football Chelsea are playing under him is starting to feel turgid for some fans.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Maresca is gone by the end of the season. If Chelsea don’t improve, the club could be looking for a replacement in the summer. “Chelsea dominate possession, but they aren’t creating many clear-cut chances,” he added. “Teams have started man-marking Cole Palmer, shutting down his space, and when that happens, Chelsea really struggle. If you keep Palmer quiet, Chelsea lack ideas going forward.

“Maresca’s system relies on inverted full-backs coming inside, but I think they need more width. They’re missing overlapping runs and players getting in behind the defence – right now, I just don’t see that happening.

“They also have a big problem up front with Nicolas Jackson unavailable. Maybe they try Pedro Neto through the middle, but things aren’t looking good for Chelsea. I don’t see it improving anytime soon, and I’d back Aston Villa to beat them comfortably this weekend, probably 2-0.”
