This approach ignores essential formative years and fails to reflect the reality of today’s football academies, making the rule unfair and in need of revision.

Eric Garcia spent nine years at La Masia but is not classified as a Barça-trained player because he left for Manchester City before turning 15 and only returned at 20. Similarly, Dani Olmo spent six years at Barça’s academy but moved to Dinamo Zagreb at 16, making him officially a Dinamo-trained player under UEFA’s rules.

UEFA’s regulations on youth players require a minimum of three years of training at a club between the ages of 15 and 21. This rule determines which players are classified as homegrown or youth-trained for European competitions. However, this system results in contradictions, as it overlooks a player’s early development before the age of 15.

Pedri, for example, who joined Barcelona at 17, is considered a youth player under UEFA’s criteria. Meanwhile, Eric Garcia, Dani Olmo, and Lamine Yamal, despite spending years at La Masia, do not qualify. The inconsistency arises because UEFA disregards training that occurs before age 15, leading to unexpected classifications.
