Strengths: Essengue is a rangy, versatile power forward who filled up the box score on both ends of the floor playing at a very high level of competition in the EuroCup and German BBL. Despite being the second-youngest player in this draft, he can get to the free throw line and his passing and defensive playmaking give him considerable upside to grow into.

Weaknesses: His narrow frame might make it difficult to operate inside the paint in the NBA. And his inconsistency from the perimeter might prevent his opportunistic scoring from translating to the league.

The verdict: Essengue scored steadily around the rim for Ulm, made plays off the ball, attacked the rim with long strides and drew fouls at an exceptional rate despite his youth and lack of strength. He has shown real promise with his feel for the game and ability to cover ground defensively. He still has some areas to improve to solidify his role in the NBA. Post-Draft Analysis Chicago was tipped by rival teams as a candidate to try and move up in the draft. Ultimately, they stayed at No. 12 and went with Essengue, who will be a long-term developmental investment for the Bulls. Chicago has needed younger frontcourt help for some time, and Essengue could give them an element of versatility and size at forward that the roster presently lacks, allowing them to potentially play a faster style that falls in concert with some of the other pieces on the roster. With a 7-foot wingspan and the agility to switch on the perimeter or fly in as a weak-side rim helper, he brings real versatility and energy. He guards multiple positions, plays above the rim, and has the tools to become a disruptive force in the NBA if his strength and motor continue to improve. He brings size, length, and defensive versatility at a position of need. The offense may take time, and the jumper needs to become more reliable, but the foundation is intriguing. If the Bulls are willing to be patient with his development, they could come away with one of the most athletic and versatile forwards in the class.
