Arsenal have signed goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea for a fee of £5million ($6.9m).

Kepa has joined Arsenal on a three-year deal, moving across London for a £5m fee. He leaves Chelsea for just seven per cent of what they paid for him seven years ago.

Assuming agent fees of 10 per cent on the transfer, and the transfer levy due on the deal, Kepa's signing will cost Arsenal a total of £5.7m, spread across his three-year contract term. £1.7m will land in their 2025-26 books, then £1.9m a season over the next two financial years before a mere £156,000 is recorded in 2028-29 (a quirk of player contracts running to the end of June while Arsenal's accounting date arrives in May).

Chelsea signed Kepa from Athletic Club in August 2018 for £71.6m, a world record fee for a goalkeeper, which still stands today. He signed a seven-year deal, then extended for a further year last summer.

However, due to the way transfer fees are accounted for, Kepa's book value has also reduced significantly. His value at Chelsea is close to the price Arsenal are paying to sign him and, after estimating agent fees on his initial purchase and subsequent contract renewal, we project Chelsea will book an accounting loss of just £0.4m on Kepa's sale.
