Inside Arsenal's pre-season tour: Heinze's influence, Gyokeres' style, and the maturity of Dowman

Viktor Gyokeres joined Arsenal's tour of Singapore and Hong Kong halfway through, but Mikel Arteta had already begun making plans for him.

Since the resumption of training in July, Arteta has begun implementing this change, fine-tuning his team ahead of the new season. It is a process, something which may not shift overnight. In the defeat against Tottenham that ended their tour, Arsenal occasionally looked like a work-in-progress. Nevertheless, their manager is convinced his team is headed in the right direction.

Although Zubimendi naturally gravitates to former Real Sociedad team-mate Merino, he has impressed with his efforts to integrate and speak English. Zubimendi has a good grasp of the language and continues to take two lessons a week.

On Tuesday, July 22, news broke that Arsenal were nearing an agreement for Gyokeres. It was big news among the squad, many of whom were closely following the transfer saga.

Several players departed holding ice packs to knocks they'd received. Arteta doesn't like the semantics of the word "friendly" --- internally, he refers to these games as "tests". In the case of Newcastle, that certainly felt appropriate.

The question Arteta must wrestle with now is when he will be ready to take to the field in a competitive fixture.

Executive vice-chair Lewis had flown the day before and was there to greet Gyokeres at the stadium on arrival.

He can help a lot of the young players that we have in the team, we have many young players as well, which is good. But you have to mix it up with some veteran players as well. I think we have a really good balance in our squad this year."

The players --- including new signing Noni Madueke --- will report back to London Colney on Monday ahead of the friendly against Villarreal on August 6. Their Premier League season kicks off on Sunday, August 17, away to Manchester United.
